A Broken Heart (1)

I then went to my own OBGYN doctor who had delivered my send child, but this time, he was a very devout Catholic. He also asked about the amnio test, which I declined. I told him point blank, “Dr. Benninati, I don’t care if this child has Down syndrome, I am having this baby.” He understood, of course, and that ended this discussion.

Katie’s story really began when I thought that I was pregnant. Since my insurance was an HMO I needed to see the general practitioner first to get a recommendation to my OBGYN. This was the first time I went to see this doctor because our insurance plan was brand new. During the examination, his questions were quite startling. He asked me “How many children do you already have?” I replied, “two children”. He commented back, “Don’t you think that two children are enough?” His next question was, “How old are you?” I replied, “37”. He commented, “Don’t you think you are too old to have another child?” I was dumbfounded and replied, “NO, I am not too old and I am continuing this pregnancy!” At this point I was getting really angry. Then a statement . . . He said, “You need to get a blood test and an amniocentesis.” I said, “No I don’t need to get an amniocentesis and if it turned out with a problem, I would go through the rest of the pregnancy with much worry and that would not be good for the baby. No I refuse and I know my rights.” I stormed out of his office and vowed never to return. In my head I was wondering if he got paid for referrals from some abortion clinic. The even sadder thing was that I knew he came from a very good Catholic family. I knew this because his brother was in my class in high school.

I am going to jump to her delivery seven months later at Chester County Hospital in West Chester. I was scheduled for a c-section and my husband, John, was with me in the delivery room when the blessed event occurred. Dr. Benninati quickly handed over my baby Katie to an attended Pediatrician and there was a lot of commotion behind me as they cleaned her up and continued monitoring her. The attending pediatrician brought Katie over to me and very matter of factly

announced that she had Down syndrome and pointed out all the features on her face and her back. The Pediatrian’s team and John ran out of the delivery room and down to the Nursery to further evaluate her. She got a “2 out of a possible 12”. She was floppy, pulse rate abnormal, response to facial stimulation absent, and appearance bluish-grey. Hands and feet were blue. The only thing that scored a “2” was her strong cry. Dr. Benninati gave me a quick sedative to put me to sleep because of the shock.

That very morning another baby at my hospital was born with Down syndrome about an hour after my delivery. This family already knew that their baby girl had Downs. Their medical team was ready with a heart specialist to evaluate the baby in the nursery. As the specialist was evaluating this baby, my baby Katie turned completely blue and the heart specialist

ran over to Katie and started giving orders to all the nurses to start connecting tubes etc. all over her body. Within the hour a transport ambulance arrived from Children’s Hospital to take her down to CHOP in Philadelphia. Before they left the hospital they came to my room to show me my baby first. It was the second time I saw her face, but I really couldn’t see her at all due to about 10 tubes and wires all connected to her body in what looked like a spaghetti mess with a glass dome over her entire body. They kept asking me, “Can you see her?” and the God’s honest truth is that I couldn’t. The blessed day had turned into a nightmare!

MYTH: Scientists know everything there is to know about Down syndrome.

TRUTH: Though we know that an extra full or partial copy of chromosome 21 causes the characteristics of Down syndrome, researchers are making great strides in identifying how individual genes on chromosome 21 affect a person with Down syndrome. Scientists now feel strongly that it will be possible to improve, correct, or prevent many of the health problems associated with Down syndrome in the future.
